Decision guide
.com vs .ai for startups
Choose the extension that makes your company easier to understand, remember, and trust. The best answer depends on your audience and positioning—not on which ending is fashionable.

The short answer
Use .com for breadth; use .ai for a clear AI signal
Prefer .com when the brand needs to feel category-neutral, serve a broad audience, or remain unchanged if the product moves beyond AI. Prefer .ai when artificial intelligence is central to the product promise and the extension makes the full name more distinctive.
If both are affordable and strategically important, secure both and redirect the secondary domain to one canonical address. Do not split a young brand across two active websites.
Choose .com when
Choose .com when
- Your buyers extend well beyond technical or AI-native audiences.
- The company may expand into products where AI is an implementation detail.
- Spoken recall, email use, and conventional trust matter more than signaling novelty.
- You can get a strong .com without adding awkward words, hyphens, or spelling compromises.
Choose .ai when
Choose .ai when
- AI is a durable part of the product category and value proposition.
- Your audience already recognizes .ai and will not routinely type .com instead.
- The .ai version is materially shorter or more memorable than realistic .com alternatives.
- The extension completes the name rather than compensating for a weak brand word.
A five-test decision
Score the complete name, not just the extension
- Say it aloud. Can someone hear it once and type the correct address?
- Remove the product pitch. Does the name remain distinctive without a tagline?
- Imagine the next product. Will the domain still fit after a reasonable expansion or pivot?
- Inspect the full cost. Check initial and renewal pricing, including premium status, before committing.
- Check conflicts. Review search results, company registries, social handles, and relevant trademark databases.
